People enjoy 90s music due to factors like nostalgia for a perceived simpler time, a wide variety of influential genres, and a focus on musicality and emotion before the prevalence of Auto-Tune. The era also saw the rise of influential cultural movements like grunge, which resonated with audiences, and some feel modern music lacks the "passion" and "dynamics" of the 90s. Younger generations, such as Gen Z, are drawn to its themes of alienation and escapism, influencing the comeback of genres like 90s alt-rock.

Nostalgia and a Simpler Era

  • A simpler time:

Many people associate the 90s with a sense of simplicity, safety, and less constant connectivity, creating a nostalgic appeal for a more carefree time.

  • Comfort and escapism:

For some, especially Gen Z, listening to 90s music provides a form of comfort and escapism from the challenges of the modern world.

Musical Quality and Innovation

  • Diverse Genres:

The 90s featured a broad range of music, from boy bands and hip hop to country and rock, offering something for everyone.

  • Musicality and Emotion:

Many listeners appreciate the perceived higher quality of musicianship and the emotional depth in 90s music, feeling that it featured more genuine vocal performances and passionate songwriting.

  • Absence of Auto-Tune:

The lack of widespread Auto-Tune in 90s music is often cited as a reason for enjoying its authentic, "live" vocal quality.

Cultural Influence and Connection

  • Influential Trends:

Genres like grunge became cultural phenomena, with music influencing fashion and a counter-culture aesthetic that resonated with many.

  • Influence on Modern Music:

Many modern bands continue to carry forward the sounds, themes, and lyrical styles of 90s alternative rock, making the music feel relevant to new audiences.

  • Parental Influence:

For Gen Z, exposure to 90s music through their parents has also been a significant factor in their appreciation of the genre, according to The Toronto Observer
