Prince Rogers Nelson (June 7, 1958 – April 21, 2016) was an American singer, songwriter, musician, and actor. Called "the greatest musical talent of his generation" by Billboard magazine,[8] Prince was known for his flamboyant, androgynous persona,[9][10] wide vocal range—which included a far-reaching falsetto—and high-pitched screams, as well as his skill as a multi-instrumentalist, often preferring to play all or most of the instruments on his recordings.[11] His music incorporated a wide variety of styles, including funk, disco, R&B, rock, new wave, soul, synth-pop, pop, jazz, blues, and hip hop. Prince produced his albums himself, pioneering the Minneapolis sound.
Born and raised in Minneapolis, Prince signed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records at the age of 18, soon releasing the studio albums For You (1978) and Prince (1979).
He went on to achieve critical success with the influential albums Dirty Mind (1980), Controversy (1981), and 1999 (1982). In 1984, Prince became the first singer to simultaneously have a number-one film, album and single in the US, with the film Purple Rain, its soundtrack, and his first Billboard Hot 100 chart-topping single "When Doves Cry", which later ranked as the biggest hit of the year. The album, recorded with his new backing band the Revolution, spent six consecutive months atop the US Billboard 200 chart[12] and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. The movie grossed $70.3 million worldwide and it has been regarded as one of the greatest musical films.[13][14] After disbanding the Revolution, Prince released the album Sign o' the Times (1987), widely hailed by critics as the greatest work of his career.

Prince has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, ranking him among the best-selling music artists of all time.[20] His awards include the Grammy President's Merit Award, the American Music Awards for Achievement and of Merit, the Billboard Icon Award, an Academy Award, and a Golden Globe Award. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006, and the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2016, and was inducted twice into the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame in 2022.[21][22] Estimates of the complete number of songs written by Prince range anywhere from 500 to well over 1,000.

Prince remains one of America's top talents. He's an inspiration to so many people as the Cats cradle has come to realize. Still topping as one of their biggest nights in their 6 and a half year history of hosting tribute events.
The Cat's Cradle is open to revisiting this idea every April 21 on the anniversary of his passing. Will you be attending?
